A blind flange is a solid disk used to block off a pipeline or to create a stop. Similar to a regular flange, a blind flange has mounting holes around the perimeter and the gasket sealing rings are machined into the mating surface. The difference is that a blind flange has no opening for fluids to pass through.

The ASME B16.5 standard covers pressure-temperature ratings, materials, dimensions, tolerances, marking, testing and methods of specifying openings for pipe flanges and flange connections. ASME B16.5 covers pipe flanges and flange connections with NPS 1/2 through NPS 24 metric/inch pressure 150LB to 2500LB. This specification requires that the flange surface (convex and flat) be of a specific roughness to ensure that the surface is compatible with the gasket and provides a high quality seal. Serrated finishes, both concentric and helical, require between 30 and 55 notches per inch, resulting in a roughness between 125 and 500 microinches. This allows flange manufacturers to provide different levels of surface finish for gasket contact surfaces of metal flanges.
