Blind Flange is one type of flange which has no bore, and is used to close ends of piping systems. A blind flange also permits easy access to a line once it has been sealed. The blind flanges are sometimes machined to accept a pipe of the nominal Size to which reduction is being made. The difference is that a blind flange has no opening for fluids to pass through. Instead, it is placed in between two open flanges, which stops the flow through a pipe. Many times this type of blockade is used when adding another line onto an existing pipeline or when a new valve is being added. 

Blind flanges are commonly used in petrochemical, pipe engineering, public services and water works. They are useful for making repairs to a pipeline further up the line. In fact, during construction of a pipeline, a blind flange may be built into the final length of pipe. This allows for expansion or continuation of the pipeline simply by adding onto the final flange.

The ASME B16.5 code requires that the flange face (raised face and flat face) has a specific roughness to ensure that this surface be compatible with the gasket and provide a high quality seal. A serrated finish, either concentric or spiral, is required with 30 to 55 grooves per inch and a resultant roughness between 125 and 500 micro inches. This allows for various grades of surface finish to be made available by flange manufactures for the gasket contact surface of metal flanges.
